 Throughout my first year on the illustration course I believe that I have vastly improved in both my personal artwork and my artwork within the course. In September of 2021 I would say that my confidence within my artwork was quite low, although there where the odd few pieces that I was proud of, I still did doubt a lot of my skills, comparing a lot of my outcomes to the outcomes of others. Previously in my art journey, I would just remove and bin whatever I didn't like, making it difficult to track my progress, however in the past year I have tried to stop myself from doing this as often, so that my sketchbooks feel like a more loved item than just a burden that I don't want to look at. During most of lockdown, I often worked digitally on my iPad, using the program procreate.   Illustration Trends – 5.5.22 Throughout 2020 and 2021, the whole world shut down, including the illustration business. The impact of the pandemic translated into the type of illustrations people where creating. A big trend included medical illustration, creating all types of posters and campaigns. A lot of the world was dominated by the illustration side as it became the primary method of advertisement and campaigning. For example, a lot of the posters for the NHS were illustrated with imagery to encourage people to wash their hands for longer and try to stop the spread of covid. Another example is the many charts and data pages shown throughout the years on the news, which were all graphic as well as informative. Because of Lockdown, illustration became the norm as things like photography and filmography could not safely be conducted.   Gemma Flack Gemma Flack is a non-binary queer tattoo artist who advocates on the themes of identity, vulnerability, gender, mental health, queerness, self discovery and coming to terms with life. They create zines as well as DIY publishing along with their tattoo work. In my opinion I really enjoy Gemma Flack’s work, their work has a great message of activism as well as they are a good influence for young LGBTQ+ teens as well as anyone who is struggling with finding themselves and their identity. Flack has a very cute and bubbly style, which to me is very pleasing to look at. Their style is unique to them and only emphasises their enthusiasm for art and tattooing.  Throughout their artwork the formal elements are used, including line. Flack uses a lot of thin lines and single lines to create the form of whoever or whatever they are drawing.   Caroline Frumento Caroline Frumento is a freelance artist who primarily works digitally. She has a large online presence and is well liked and looked up to on the online art community. Frumento was inspired from an early age by cartoons and comics, which is portrayed throughout her current artwork to this day. Frumento’s work is often based on her own daily life . I really enjoy the line work as despite its simplicity it can convey the form in a creative and aesthetic manner. The element of form is created using simple curvy shapes as well as straight lines, the basic line work compliments the basic forms of each object in each artwork.  Something I really like about Frumento’s work is the use of rough, small lines to convey texture for things like clothing and fur, I believe this adds to her simplistic art style.   Sabrina Cotugno – 30/03/22   Sabrina Cotugno is a director, writer and storyboard artist who has worked on cartoons such as the owl house, Star vs the forces of evil and Gravity falls. Cotugno is also the creator of a comic called The Glass scientists, which is where I first came across their artwork. Their comic has meant a lot to me through the years and is one of my all-time favourite pieces of media, I also used to watch a lot of the shows they worked on when I was younger.               Cotugno has a very cartoony style that has a lot of simplistic elements to it, they use a lot of techniques such as cell shading to give their artwork both a detailed and minimalistic style.   17/03/22 To begin, the first module I worked on was the “Intro to Illustration” project which focused on showcasing ourselves through our artwork using symbolisms and metaphors. Completing this module was rather difficult personally as we where using new techniques and technology I had not seen in the past. To create out final pieces we used the Riso printer, which prints artwork out in layers. The techniques I stuck too throughout this module where digital as I wanted to focus on something I already knew whilst learning the process of this new printing technique. Throughout this module I learnt about layering techniques and how different blending styles, such as dot work, create different forms of colours and textures. Overall, I didn’t enjoy my overall outcome as it didn’t feel like something I had produced, it felt more like a project I had only produced work for because I needed to.
